The following is a conversation Jack and I had at Target today, while picking out new tennis shoes for him.
Me: Okay Jackson, what shoes do you like?
J: Look! Pink ones!
Me: No, how about this white and red pair?
J: No, I want pink shoes.
Me: No, Mommy would kill Daddy if he came home and you had (me looking closer) pink princess shoes on your feet.
J: Pink shoes pretty.
Me: Yes, they are pretty but we are not going to buy you pink shoes.
J: I pick my new shoes?
Me: Yes, you can pick your shoes. But you have to pick them from this side. These are the boy shoes.
J: Okay.
Me: Which ones do you like?
J: The pink ones. Pink shoes pretty.
He ended up with white, blue and red shoes, which he really likes and could not wait to wear.

Hehe, I hear ya! Kids often seem to fall into those gender roles on their own (Hannah LOVES her dolls and mommies them constantly where her little boy friend comes over and tries to kick and throw them) but I have found myself steering Hannah away from the dark blue Thomas the Train bedsheets and over to the pink Princess bedsheets, which match her toddler bed and the rest of her room much better.
