A highlight of last week was the visit of our friends Cathy and Eric and their eight-month old son Chris from Indianapolis. (Both were Butler band geeks, and Eric was my roommate for a year.) We have not seen them in a couple of years and had not met their baby, yet. The purpose of their visit was a sad one, as Cathy's aunt was succumbing (and sadly passed away on Friday) to cancer. They wanted to make sure that she got to meet Chris before she went.
Besides getting to catch up with Cathy and Eric, the positive aspect of their visit was getting to meet Chris and watching him and Jack interact. Chris was the first baby his own "age" that Jack has met. It was amazing to see the differences between a four-month old's development and an eight-month old's. Especially when one realizes that in a couple of years those four months will make no difference at all. Jack really was not sure how to react with another baby. He is used to looking at the "baby" in the mirror and it doing the same thing he is. Another one that acts independently and really wants to play was a little too much for the little guy. Chris really wanted to play with Jack, but Jack was not too sure about his and I think it freaked him out a bit.
Jack eventually came around, though, even if he did not take quite the active interest that Chris did. Jack seemed to favor interacting at a slight difference, where he could keep an eye on the other cutie-pie, but would not have to play.
I can't wait to get them together again in a few months or next year when Jack will be a little more willing to play!
