Here We Go(ng) Again
I decided that I really missed playing in gamelan. Actually, I have been missing playing any type of music, so I am playing with U of M's gamelan. (If your thinking to yourself, "What the hell is a gamelan," click here. It is an old page, but it will give you the basic information.) And once again, I am playing the Gong. To those that have been involved in UM's gamelan for a few years, it is rather amusing that I am playing Gong. I played it the first year I was in the ensemble. The second year, I was playing something else and before the school year was half over I was back there again. We had a new instructor (Sigit Soegito) last year, so I was able to play something different. Somewhere along the line he spoke to the previous teacher (Wasi Bantolo), and I think he mentioned my superb gonging ability. (Sarcasm is so lost in print.) Anyway, for our first performance in a couple of weeks I will be sitting in the back with my old friend the Gong. So be sure to "tune" in for more adventures of me in gamelan!

Perhaps Gong wanted you back since you're a chicken grilling expert...be careful, once you start making Indonesian kebabs with spicy dark peanut sauce and the gong won't let you out of the gamelan room...it might send tigers after you!
The Oberlin Gong definetly did not like me. It sounded fine in their gamelan room. But we did not give it an offering and it sounded kind of (g)rumbly during the performance.
