Jack's First Vacation

Posts will be scarce until next week. We were in Chicago last weekend for a four-day weekend, and we are leaving for Thanksgiving with my family in Southern Indiana tonight.

Kate was invited to our friend Tina's baby shower outside of Chicago this last weekend. We decided it was a good chance to get away for a couple of days, so we drove up on Thursday and took Jack to Shedd Aquarium on Friday.

Originally, we had discussed going to the art museum, but we thought Jack might be a little more amused by looking at fish. It ended up being a great decision as Jack loved looking at the fish. If you have never been to Shedd (you should!) as soon as you walk into the main part of the building there is a huge aquarium with all kinds of colorful fish and sharks. As we walked up to the tank, Jack let out a big gasp and got the biggest smile on his face. I figured he would be mildly amused and maybe watch the fish. But I had no idea how enraptured he would be by them. Up until right after lunch when he became sleepy, he watched and talked to all the fish we saw. His favorite was all the turtles though. Whenever we walked up to a tank with a turtle, he started babbling and kicking his feet. I think we stood and let him talk to a giant snapping turtle for between five and ten minutes. The turtle, of course, was being aggressive and opening its mouth to try to scare us off, which made Jack even more excited.

On Friday night, we went to Tina and Rick's house for dinner. Jack gave them a taste of what is to come with their baby and hopefully did not scare them too much. After visiting with more friends (Jen, Jill, and Carrie) Saturday night and Sunday morning, we came home. Jack, who is usually excellent on long car drives, cried through the entire state of Michigan. Well, not quite all--he finally fell asleep two miles from our house.

I did not take too many pictures last weekend, and most of those I did take did not turn out very well.
