I had two days of orientation at Wayne State this last week. The first was for the Fine and Performing Arts program I am in, while the second was for all eighty-ish new students in the general Library and Information Science Program. (Or LISP) Here is what I learned:
1. That even at the graduate level, some students still need their mother there to ask questions for them. (Seriously)
2. That bad parking karma follows me everywhere.
I had a terrible time at UM getting parking tickets, most given to me under questionable circumstances. I've driven twice to WSU and both times ended poorly. The first was before I had my student ID, so I had to pay. According to the website, visitor parking is $3.75 for the day. I was charged $10. I had no choice to pay, as I could not leave the garage unless I did. I'm still trying to figure this one out. The next day, I parked in the garage (with my student ID at $2.25 for the day) and came back to a Parking Warning that said I was illegally parked and the next infraction would result in my car getting "ticked and towed." It really did say that. At least I know that my car will be mad if it gets towed. So I looked around to see why I was illegally parked and then I saw it. Lying on the ground in the shadows, face down, was a beat-up old "No Parking" sign. Being Detroit, there was a chain through it so nobody would steal it. I guess that was more important than being able to read it.
3. That by the time I graduate, I will be a "Microsoft Master." Cool.
4. That by the time I graduate, being a Microsoft Master will probably make me even nerdier than I already am. If such a thing is possible. (Kate laughs and says "probably?")
5. That LaPita makes decent Falafel.
6. Technically, I didn't learn this at orientation, but read it in an article...At a librarian party in NYC, the guests had to order their drinks by Dewey Decimal number.
7. That the second day of orientation was rather redundant.
8. That it will be nice to talk to grown ups more often, but I will miss Jack.
9. That women far outnumber the men in the LISP.
10. That I get to spend the next eight months (or so) interning (and getting paid to do so) with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. By far, the best thing I learned.

We are off to Traverse City on vacation for the next four days. I'll try to blog while we are there, but don't hold your breath

Hmm, a Microsoft Master? That's almost as cool as being a Jedi Master.
Have a great trip up north! And tell Kate to find a New York and Company along the way because they are giving out City Cash right now. I got FIVE that I get to spend in September. :)
How do you order drinks by Dewey Decimal numbers?
