Either way, today was the start of the school year. Jack has been counting down the sleeps (he measures time in sleeps, not days) for the past month. He has been begging us to go to school so he could "learn, play, and meet new friends." We love it that he always puts learn first. Although, I think he does it because he thinks it will help his chances of getting to go.
Little boy was so excited this morning that he was bouncing off the walls. I mean, he was literally running up to the walls and bouncing off them. I had always heard this expression, but I had never seen anyone actually do it until Jack came along.
Amelie and I dropped him off. We discovered that his homeroom for the year is the music room. I was very pleased, of course.
I was worried that once he got there he would not want me to leave, since he stopped going to daycare back in February. Ha! I don't think he even said goodbye. The other kids were quietly milling around, a couple of them talking to each other. Jack marched right up to the teacher and the aide and announced, "I'm Jack Weber, J-A-C-K." He rambled on and forgot I was even there. (Actually, Amelie was the upset one, since she did not get to stay, too.)
When we picked him up, his homeroom teacher told me that he did great and added, "My goodness, for such a small boy he certainly has a big personality!"
You have no idea lady.
Jack loved it. But it was hard to get him to tell me exactly what they did.
Me: So, what did you do on your first day?
J: Sat Criss-cross applesauce and told our names.
Me: Oh, what were your friends' names?
J: I have no idea.
Me: Were you not paying attention?
J: Oh, I was. They were just too quiet.
(Later in the day, he remembered some of their names--just the girls.)
Me: Well, what were some of your teachers' names?
J: I have no idea.
Me: Okay, well what else did you do?
J: Well, we did not play with toys. And we did not go in to the train room. (The geography room?)
Me: Okay, but what did you do?
J: Hmm, we did not go into the Spanish room or the Theater.
Me: I'm sure there are a lot of things you did not do, but I want to know what happened!
J: Oh, gave our names. Spelled them. Played with some puppets. Ate lunch.
Much later, Kate had much the same conversation, but with the following addition.
K: Aaah! Well, did you...sing any songs?
J: Oh, yeah! We sang "Blah Blah Black Sheep."
K: You mean, "Baa Baa Black Sheep."
J: No, Mommy, the song is called "Blah Blah Black Sheep." You know, "have you any wool?" And maybe there is a "Blah Blah Pink Sheep," too.

Kate wanted pictures of his first day. I ended up with a "family" shot.
Jack quickly lost interest in pictures.
This would be his "snarky" look...
He did not say it here, but he will occasionally ask me, "Do you see me rolling my eyes?"

Apparently sitting criss-cross applesauce is a common theme among all preschoolers.
It must be. I had never heard of it until Jack started talking about it last year. It must not be PC to call it "Indian style" anymore.
