Okay, it technically was not "grand," but Kate and I were able to dress up and go out to a nice restaurant for her birthday...without Jack. Even though she goes to work without Jack everyday, Kate was still a little weird about going somewhere without him. But she made it through the evening--crying during dinner only once--and we had a good time. We had a lovely dinner at Weber's Inn. Yes, that is really the name of the restaurant. It has been on our list of places to try for quite some time--mostly because of the name. But it was actually quite a nice place. It was rather amusing, though, when I gave them my last name for reservations. The poor hostess was rather confused.
The diners at the adjacent table kept us rather amused, too. There were two incidents that stood out. It appeared to be a date early in the relationship, judging from the conversation. (The guy was speaking so loudly, it was impossible not to listen.) They had just sat down. He looked at his date and asked, "So what do you want to do after dinner? This is your night. We can go to a movie, go to a bar, get a room at the Best Western (joking, yet hopeful, laugh), or go dancing. Whatever you want babe." She slyly ignored this comment. He then spent the next ten minutes ignoring her and talking loudly on his cell phone. "Man, we just sitting having dinner with a bunch of Ann Arbor yuppies." I just happened to look up and saw that he was pointedly looking at me. I have been called many things in my life, but never a yuppie. Yikes.
Jack did very well with the Rousts. He was glad to see us when we picked him up, but he seems to have had a very good time. Amy has posted pictures and a video on her blog. They were even able to get him to wave at the camera for a video, something I have not been able to accomplish.
All in all, our adventure away from Jack went very well. Of course, the true test will come in April when we go on a cruise and spend five days away from him...

Oh, I feel slightly guilty for getting the first "wave at the camera video" ... he pretty much waved at us all evening, so I guess we were lucky. I'll burn a copy for you guys!
