Parlez-vous Weber?

When Jack was roughly Amelie's age, we got in the habit of using certain code words at meal times to talk about foods he really liked, like "potato sticks" instead of french fries. We discovered that if we said the actual name of the food it would be the only thing he wanted, which was bad if we were out of that food or he needed to eat something else first. I thought we could try saying them in French, but some food words are too close to English. Spelling them out would have made sense, but...well, Kate and I sometimes just do not think of the obvious solution.

We realized tonight that our cryptic dinner speak has gotten a little out of hand. We do not need to do if for Jack anymore, but avoiding naming foods with Amelie is a must. And since she eats and likes more than he did, we seem to have had to rename a bunch more foods.There are times, though, that we don't quite get what the other one is talking about. But usually we do.

We had the following conversation at the start of dinner tonight. After it was over, we both cracked up because it was just so ridiculous.

K: What did Amelie have for breakfast?
J: She started with a bar of fruit and grain, but then she saw that Jack and I had slotted-machine bread, so she had to have that. Then she had fermented dairy product.
K: Okay...Wait, slotted-machine bread? You mean the grain discs with small squares that you eat with maple product?
J: No, we are out of frozen manhole covers. I meant hot bread with butter.
K: Ohhh, I see. Wow, that was a big breakfast.
J: I know. I think that is why she didn't eat much of her dairy product in fried bread at lunch. I should have given her some red sauce to dip it in. All she really ate was some smashed pommes.
K: Has she had any shredded or string dairy product?
J: No.
K: Okay, I'll give her some of that. Should I give her some yellow monkey fruit too?
Me: No, we are out of those. We still have small red fruit, though.
